Sometimes you encounter animals or people that draw the eye immediately. They're compelling, interesting and photogenic. And at other times, they're puppies. Great Pyrenees puppies. Dogs the size of bears, but nippy and cuddly at seven weeks old. Barrhead Animal Rescue Society has seven now up for adoption.

The Backup Finds
I've been doing a bit of a backup of files processed at the Barrhead Leader office and three popped up, each completely unique. It's not often you have the chance to shoot a good portrait, a mime and a bunch of kids having a blast in the snow. Check out barrheadleader.com for the stories associated with the pictures.

In the middle is Chris Driessen, owner of a flower shop in Barrhead who won the people's choice award at the Growth Awards recently. On the bottom is Max-I-Mime from Vancouver, a mime that performed as part of the Barrhead Arts Council's music and cultural series in town. Finally the top photo are some kids playing on a playground that'll be replaced through fundraising at Children's World Daycare Centre.

The Playoffs
It's starting to feel like shooting minor hockey has become a job, rather than a challenge and I'm comfortable with that change. The rink I'm usually tied to on weekends has a lot of netting to protect the parents and girlfriends that take their seats, but don't really watch the game. For parents, you get that feeling that many hope their kid makes it out of town with their on-ice skills but that's a very remote possibility. Many of these kids are having their moment in the sun. Their parents don't know that. It can be depressing and uplifting as I'm the one documenting their time in uniform. My next game is at 3:30. I better clean my cards.

The best thing about baseball and maybe...just maybe the sport is great in the same ways Stones records are great, newspapers are great and drinking whiskey is great. It's over the hill, obsolete and outdated and brilliant. Plus, hitting a fastball is damn tough, whether it's slowpitch or a fastball in the World Series. This is Joe, he's played the game since the 1940's.
